Hornets Fall Short in Sooner State Slugfest Against Bison

Emporia State scored in six different innings but ultimately fell to Oklahoma Baptist 16-13 in a midweek slugfest on Tuesday afternoon.

Emporia State jumped ahead in the first plate appearance with three runs. With two outs in the top of the first, Quinton Carlberg lifted his fourth home run of the season to left field as the Hornets took a 3-0 lead over the Bison.

The Hornets were unable to hold their advantage through the bottom half as the Bison scored six runs in the first frame to take a 6-3 lead over Emporia State.

Oklahoma Baptist tallied a pair of runs in both the second and third inning to take a 10-3 lead before the Hornets were able to strike again in the top of the fourth inning.

Kase Johnson drew a leadoff walk and later came around to score on a wild pitch to trim the Oklahoma Baptist lead down to 10-4.

Emporia State kept the Bison off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth before scoring another run in the fifth. Quinton Carlberg recorded a two-out RBI single for his fourth

RBI of the game to score Palmer Hutchison and make the score 10-5.

In the sixth inning, the Hornets were able to trim the lead down to just two runs as a two RBI triple from Jake Bucovetsky followed by a wild pitch that made the score 10-8 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Oklahoma Baptist was able to expand their lead to 13-8 in the bottom half of the sixth with a trio of solo home runs.

Despite another run from the Hornets in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Kase Johnson to make the score 13-9, the Bison regained their five run lead, 14-9 over

Emporia State entering the final two innings.

Following a pair of runs from Oklahoma Baptist in the eighth, the Hornets trailed 16-9 entering their final at-bat.

With one out in the top of the ninth, back-to-back singles from Johnson and Chandler Bloomer followed by a walk drawn by Brenden Tauber loaded the bases for Kadyn Williams. Williams shaved four runs from the deficit as he lifted his first home run of the season, a grand slam to right center, to make the score 16-13.

The Hornets were unable to inch any closer as they fell to the Bison 16-13 on Tuesday afternoon from Shawnee, Okla.

Kadyn Williams went 3-6 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored. Quinton Carlberg went 2-3 with a home run, four RBI, two walks and two runs scored. Five more Hornets recorded a hit including Chandler Bloomer who went 3-5 with two runs scored.

Emporia State will return home for their first home series from Glennen Field this season, with a three-game MIAA series against Fort Hays State. The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday, March 3 and is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
