Hornets Drop Saturday Doubleheader Against Vikings

Emporia State fell in both games of their Saturday doubleheader against Augustana (SD). The Hornets fell 12-6 in game one before falling 12-3 in game two from Rock Creek HS.

Game One

The Hornets fell behind early as the Vikings scored the game's first run with an RBI single down the right field line in the top of the first inning.

Emporia State went down in order in the bottom of the first inning before Augustana added two more runs in the second inning. The Hornets retired the first two batters of the inning before a two-out walk was followed by a two-run home run to give Augustana a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the second inning, Emporia State earned their first base runner as Palmer Hutchison drew a walk but were held scoreless.

Augustana continued to expand their lead as they added another seven runs in the third inning which included a grand slam as the Hornets trailed the Vikings 10-0 heading into the bottom half of the third inning.

The Hornets responded with their first two runs of the game as Quinton Carlberg hit a two-run home run to left field to make the score 10-2 through three innings.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth inning before the Hornets and Vikings both hit solo home runs in the fifth inning as Emporia State trailed 11-3 through five innings.

The solo home run for the Hornets came from Quinton Carlberg, his second of the game.

The offense for both teams slowed through the rest of the game with Augustana leading Emporia State 12-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning.

Emporia State would add three runs to their total in the final inning of game one. Patryck Hernandez tallied his second RBI of the season with a groundout to the right side to score Kadyn Williams before Brooks Whaley trotted home following a balk. Gibrian Pena singled to right field to score Jake Bucovetsky.

The Hornets were unable to inch any closer in the seventh as they fell to the Vikings 12-6 in game one of the doubleheader.

Quinton Carlberg led the Hornets at the plate as he went 2-3 with two home runs and three RBI. Gibrian Pena, Kadyn Williams, Brooks Whaley and Chandler Bloomer each recorded a hit for Emporia State in game one.

Game Two

Augustana jumped out to another quick start in game two as they hit a three-run home run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead over the Hornets.

Following a scoreless bottom half of the second inning for Emporia State, the Vikings rallied to score six runs and build a 9-0 lead heading to the bottom of the third inning.

Emporia State would score all three runs in the game in the bottom of the third inning as Andrew Rantz lifted a three-run home run to trim the Vikings' lead to 9-3 through three innings.

The Vikings responded with three more runs in the fourth inning before both offenses were held scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Emporia State fell in game two of the doubleheader 12-3.

Andrew Rantz went 1-3 with a home run and three RBI while Gibrian Pena went 2-4 with a run scored. TJ Racherbaumer and Quinton Carlberg each recorded a hit for the Hornets in game two.
