Braves Fall Short to Briar Cliff, 69-67

The Ottawa University men's basketball team opened its second semester with a 69-67 loss to non-conference opponent, Briar Cliff University, on Saturday afternoon in Wilson Field House.

The Braves took an 11-5 lead over the Chargers to start the game. BCU scored the next seven points, taking a 12-11 lead over the Braves with 13:43 to go in the first half.

Ottawa responded with a 20-5 run to take a 31-19 lead over Briar Cliff. A basket by Deondre Buggage with 5:04 on the clock gave OU a 36-24 lead. Briar Cliff did not go away, cutting into OU's lead in the final minutes of the half and the Braves took a 40-33 lead into the locker room.

The Chargers started the second half on a 20-9 run, taking a 53-49 lead over the Braves. BCU pushed its lead to six points, 60-54, with 5:46 left in regulation. The Braves chipped away at the Briar Cliff lead. Four points from Tristen Hull and a basket by Amil Fields tied the game at 60 all with 3:59 on the clock.

BCU answered with five straight points, taking a 65-60 lead. Ottawa cut into the deficit with four straight points from Ty Bland to get within one point, 65-64, with 1:47 left in the contest. That is all the closer the Braves would be able to get as Briar Cliff took the 69-67 victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Braves shot 41.3 percent from the floor, 28.6 percent from behind the 3-pt line, and 69.2 percent from the free throw line. Ottawa was 0-7 from behind the 3-pt line in the second half.
  • OU led in fast break points (17-8), points in the paint (36-18), second chance points (12-2), and bench scoring (28-7). Briar Cliff had a 16-15 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Ottawa had four players in double figures led by Ty Bland with 15 points off the bench. Amil Fields finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 16 rebounds.
  • Deondre Buggage scored 14 points and Tristen Hull finished the game with 11 points.

The Braves (6-9) return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 7 in a KCAC match up against the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth. Tip off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
