Braves Fall Short to #11 Southwestern, 84-81

The Ottawa University men's basketball team fell 84-81 to (11) Southwestern College in Stewart Field House on Saturday evening.


The first half went back and forth with nine ties and three lead changes. Southwestern had a four point lead on the Braves, 17-13, with 13:19 to go in the half. Ottawa cut into the lead and tied the game for the ninth time, 30-30, on a basket by Ty Bland.


A 3-pt field goal by Bland gave the Braves the lead, 33-30. Ottawa increased its lead to 35-30 on a 3-pt field goal from Ian Moore. A basket by Cody Fredrickson with 3:13 on the clock pushed the Brave lead to 37-30.


Southwestern chipped away at the OU lead and were within 37-35 at the 2:27 mark. A basket by Kamren Woods gave the Braves a four point lead, 39-35 with 43 seconds left in the half. Southwestern was able to cut into the Brave lead with two free throws with 21 seconds on the clock and the Braves took a 39-37 lead into the half.


Amiel Fields scored the first two points of the second half to give OU a 41-37 lead over Southwestern. The Moundbuilders scored the next four points, tying the game, 41-41. Ottawa retook the lead on a 3-pt field goal by Fields, 44-41.


Southwestern retook the lead 47-46 but Ottawa quickly answered with an Elijah Mason jumper to take a 48-47 lead over SWC with 15:39 left in regulation. The Braves increased their lead to six points, 53-47, on baskets by Fredrickson and Moore and two free throws by Fields.


Ottawa increased its lead to nine points, 62-53, with 8:55 on the clock. Southwestern rallied, tying the game with a 14-2 run, 67-64 with 3:50 left in the second half. An old fashioned 3-pt play by Fields tied the game, 67-67.


The Moundbuilders scored the next basket, retaking the lead 69-67. Ottawa answered with a 3-pt field goal by Fields to take a 70-69 lead with 2:49 on the clock. SWC retook the lead 10 seconds later, 71-70. Ottawa tied the game on its next offensive possession with a free throw from Fields, 71-71.


Southwestern then scored the next five points, taking a 76-71 lead with 1:28 to go in the game. Ottawa cut the deficit to one, 79-78, on a 3-pt field goal by Fields with 31 seconds on the clock. The Braves were forced to foul and SWC pushed its lead to four points, 82-78. A 3-pt field goal by Deondre Buggage put OU within one point, 82-81 with seven seconds on the clock.


OU fouled again and the Moundbuilders made both free throws to take an 84-81 lead. Buggage's 3-pt field goal attempt at the buzzer was no good and Southwestern took the 84-81 victory.


Inside the Box Score

  • Ottawa shot 50 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from behind the 3-pt line, and 61.9 percent from the free throw line.
  • OU had four players in double figures, led by Amil Fields double-double. He scored 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
  • Ty Bland scored 20 points, Ian Moore finished the game with 13 points, and Cody Fredrickson scored 10 points.
  • Bland led OU with two assists.
  • Buggage and Bland finished with two steals apiece.

Ottawa (3-4, 0-2) returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 in Wilson Field House against McPherson College. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
