JCCC volleyball off to hot start to 2022 season

 The Johnson County volleyball team, ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA D-II preseason poll, got off to an impressive start to its 2022 season over the weekend. The Lady Cavaliers won all four matches in a tournament in Rockford, Ill., including three ranked team, among them No. 1 Parkland. 

On day one of the tournament, Friday, August 20, Johnson County swept Waubonsee (25-, 25-7, 25-17) and No. 11 Grand Rapids (25-16, 25-18, 25-20). The following day JCCC opened with a sweep over No. 10 McHenry County (26-24, 25-11, 25-14) and capped the day by upsetting top-ranked and defending national champion Parkland in five sets (25-13, 26-28, 24-26, 25-21, 15-9). 

As a team, Johnson County hitters combined for an attack percentage of .275. Sophomore Jaydn Troutman (Wellsville, Kan.) led the way with a total of 48 kills over the weekend, while hitting a team-best .493. Troutman also recorded a team-high 18 blocks. 

Freshman Sarina Ulberg (Independence, Mo.) was second with 36 kills and an attack percentage of .358, followed by sophomore Taylor McCarthy (Shawnee, Kan.) and freshman Kylee Harris (Raymore, Mo.) with 26 and 24 kills respectively.  

Sophomore libero Addyson Mock led defense tallying 65 digs highlighted by 24 in the win over Parkland.  She was in double figures in all four matches. 

Sophomore setter Lauren McClure directed the offense tallying a total of 102 assists. She was in double digits in all four matches with a high of 37 against Parkland. 

Johnson County will make its home debut on Thursday, August 25 when they host Baker University JV at 5 p.m., followed by McPherson College JV at 7 p.m.
